Claire Dutton and Michael Cox founded STRANGELY NORMAL in late 1977. They began selling vintage clothing alongside '50s inspired menswear at Cook Street Market.
The name "Strangely Normal" came from Claire’s description of Michael’s personality and others, for a number of reasons, have since adopted the term.
As the availability of original clothing in good order grew scarce, the Normals decided to open a retail store in Hobson Street, Auckland in late 1979 and produce and sell new garments. By early 1996 the demands of retailing, tailoring and wholesaling led Strangely Normal to close the shop and move to a larger workroom in Avondale.
Relenting to customer demand for a retail store they opened up at O’Connell St, late 2006 in the heart of the fashion district in Auckland city. This proved a good move as the store has international appeal.
Claire and Michael still run the label and although it has evolved over the years, it still pays homage to '50s and '60s style.
